One of the most debated issues for the marine industry is the technologies which will drive ship design and performance in the short, medium and long term.
The technologies that will drive reduced and alternative fuel consumption are solar power, wave power, wind power and battery power. The fuel of choice in the long term will be LNG and a huge amount of development work is underway to this end.
For the time being, ships capable of burning LNG as a primary fuel are usually hybrid i.e. also allowing for conventional oil fuel propulsion. However, fuel economics, legislation demanding continuous reductions in emissions and the desire of the marine industry to maintain social license will all combine to force the pace of design and development.
